According to Reuters, U.S. intelligence sources revealed that the Russian propaganda network RT has been encouraging Americans to support Donald Trump in the presidential election. This effort, involving American bloggers and supported by the Russian state television channel RT, aimed to sway voters towards Trump and away from Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. The primary goal of Russia’s alleged election interference, mirroring 2016 efforts, was to sow discord among Americans, aligning with Russia’s desire for favorable election outcomes. No allegations were made against Trump or his campaign regarding collusion with Russia. U.S. intelligence also detected interference attempts from China and Iran, with China focusing on specific congressional districts and Iran increasing its efforts from previous years. The intelligence community privately warns potential targets of Russian election interference operations, despite Russia’s denial of involvement. On September 4, the U.S. imposed sanctions on RT’s editor-in-chief and nine others for attempting to interfere in the 2024 presidential election, with two RT employees facing charges of conspiracy to launder money.
