Austrian energy supplier Wien Energie GmbH has announced its decision to cease purchasing gas from Russia by 2025, following decades of reliance on Gazprom. The company will instead source gas from North Africa, the North Sea, and LNG exporters, covering 12% of Austria’s consumption. This move is driven by the need for security of supply amid Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, as stated by Peter Hanke, head of the Vienna Chancellery for Economic Affairs. Wien Energie has assured that this transition will not result in price increases for consumers and will require suppliers to provide certification of non-Russian gas origin.
