Ukrainian fencers defeated the South Korean team. This is Ukraine’s first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. Ukraine emerged victorious in the women’s team sabre final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, defeating the Republic of Korea in a closely contested gold-medal match on August 3. This triumph marks Ukraine’s return to the top podium for the first time since the event’s inception in 2008, following a silver medal finish at Rio 2016 and a podium miss at Tokyo 2020. Olga Kharlan, a seasoned Olympic veteran, expressed her team’s disbelief and gratitude towards Ukraine’s immense support, acknowledging her role as the team’s top point scorer with nine touches throughout the match. Kharlan’s second Olympic title and fifth overall medal were accompanied by her teammates’ jubilation, as they overcame a three-point deficit to secure a 45-42 win against the Republic of Korea. The silver medalists, equally thrilled, surpassed their Tokyo 2020 bronze finish, with Jeon Hayoung and Choi Sebin sharing their excitement and honor in securing the silver medal position. Japan secured the bronze medal with a 45-40 victory over host nation France.
